Tribute to Miles

Miles became an angel dog and went to heaven on March 15, 2017…a tribute to my Office Assistant and the unconditional love of a dog…

He lived up to his ‘Miles Davis’ name, and like jazz, he was spunky, feisty, fun and a large amount of innovation in his personality.

He came to me through the local animal rescue, and we had 17 special years together…

He lived to be 19, a long and full life for a dog.

Miles, Measles, Miley, Velcro…his many nicknames over the years…

He had more friends than I do, and he always seemed to instantly make new ones.

He loved to walk fast and determined in his neighborhood with a confidence that he owned it, and this was ‘his beat.’

He stole napkins, snitched things at times just to be noticed, and was even known to pull on the table cloth when company was over and sitting at the dining room table just to get attention!

He was a love, needed a lot of affection and gave that affection right back!

He wore his little coats like a fashion model, used all of his many beds in every room of the house, and was a clock when it came to dinner time -5 pm on the dot!

Miles had a special spirit, a sensitive dog who could read other’s emotions. I think that started when he was rescued from the shelter and mom was going through her cancer treatments at that time…he bonded closely with her and got her through a very difficult time.

He loved to sleep and was a great ‘sick dog,’ meaning he would snuggle up with you when you didn’t feel well just as long as you liked!

He inherited the Ree’s automatic recliner when she passed away, as she and he would sit there often…the only dog with his own recliner!

He liked to travel in the car to places like the Car Wash, PetSmart, and just putting his head out the window to feel the fresh air!

He liked going to Poughkeepsie to see his relatives and his cat cousin who always intrigued him…knowing that there was a cat and food behind that door.

I think the rides on the boat on the Hudson were his favorite and I remember his little life jacket and his ears flapping in the wind…

He looked for the ‘socks’ under the Christmas tree and could find them even if they were wrapped up…he snitched socks out of visitors suitcases, he loved socks, dirty or clean!

Miles was something else, he taught me how to be really present and he loved unconditionally. I think I will be talking a lot to myself as I always talked with him, shared my day, my thoughts, my emotions.

He was one of a kind and a special spirit…he will be missed and gave his all to many humans and dogs/cats in his life.

The plaque above my desk states: “My goal is to be as wonderful as my dog thinks I am.”

We celebrate his wonderful presence and gift to the world, he made a lot of people happy, especially me! He was a special little being, 16 lbs. of mischief and love! A real funster!
So give a hug to your pets and celebrate the joy that our four-legged friends give to us!

A hard day, but time to ‘let him go,’ part of the challenge of pet ownership. Thanks little buddy! Wonderful memories!
