Life is Like a See Saw, sometimes it’s up and sometimes it’s down

SeesawAs an executive coach I often hear about challenges in one’s job, the transitions to new and increasing responsibilities, the balance and integration of work and home life. With these challenges comes ‘stories’ and feelings of negativity, of disappointment in oneself and changes. I recently read an article in Psychology Today, ‘Beyond Happiness: The Upside of Feeling Down,’ which discussed negative emotions that do us a favor and at times, save us from ourselves, as the author suggests. These emotions are actually signals urging us to change what we’re doing, and they are actually necessary for feeling good.

So before you criticize yourself for feeling down, think about the full cycle of emotions that we all have and learn from the full range of those feelings. As I always say, ‘Life is like a see-saw; sometimes it’s up and sometimes it’s down. Ultimately, it balances out.’  For if you are very down at some point you will be very upbeat, and that is all part of the human condition. Know yourself and your emotions and pay attention to how you are feeling, discovering the depth of yourself, and the ongoing changes that are always occurring in our lifetime.  And once you can accept the full range of your feelings, you can explore with great introspection, the purpose of those feelings and the lessons that they teach.
